Health & Fitness: Fundamentals of Nutrition Part I - Off Season Eating and Discipline

Fridge There are a lot of people who could look great all the time, but due to their lack of discipline and knowledge it's just not possible. Often times they eat a lot of junk using the excuse that they are trying to bulk up and that they need the extra calories. This has some truth, but to a point. Eating extra calories when trying to bulk up is essential but what often gets overlooked is the quality of calories they are consuming.

The general rule here is to try to eat 300-500 additional quality calories above what your metabolic rate requires. If you are interested in finding out what your metabolic rate is, go to a search engine and type in Basal Metabolic Rate. You will get a list of various equations for finding out what it is. I would suggest trying a few of them out and see how they can vary, because they do. In other words if you are trying to "bulk up" eat more calories, but not everything in site. Often it is a lack of self-discipline that leads to an over fat bodybuilder in the off season.

Staying closer to contest shape in the off season really helps to condition your body to get leaner at a more efficient and rapid rate. Staying a bit leaner and eating cleaner in the off season encourages and conditions your metabolism to speed up. This I have found to be particularly true for the natural bodybuilder. All it takes to achieve that is to be smarter in the choices you eat at all times, not just the twelve weeks before a contest. Conditioning your body year round allows your metabolism and hormonal structure to react and respond the way you want them to when it comes time to get ready for a contest. The result: you'll look better!
